A Signature Degree for the 21st Century Librarian

From the libraries located in schools and communities to the private information centers located in businesses across the globe, our world relies on librarians to administer and interpret the flow of knowledge and ideas. As leaders and information managers, librarians enable our society, and each individual, to locate and make effective use of sources for learning, business and creative inspiration.

Unprecedented technological change has fundamentally transformed the ways by which societies communicate, as well as the ways in which information and media is created, captured, organized and archived. Today’s libraries extend beyond traditional bookshelves and filing systems. They are marvels of information architecture and infrastructure, located in schools, businesses, online, and in communities large and small.

As a result of this shift, librarians have moved to the forefront of information management, applying proficiencies in collection, organization and management to become administrative leaders and problem solvers who can provide answers and direction for the challenges of our world.

The University of Southern California’s online Master of Management in Library and Information Science (MMLIS) program is uniquely designed to prepare professional librarians, educators and other information professionals with the practical leadership skills needed to manage libraries and information centers within colleges and universities, businesses, governmental organizations and in the digital world.

Unlike other library science programs, the USC online MMLIS program provides a robust leadership, management and library and information sciences focus for students. Each course is taught through real world experience-based learning and teamwork, with faculty support and guidance. This approach encourages critical and creative thinking and the development of the skills necessary for working effectively in academic and public libraries and other institutions.
